Yoga with a Side of Science

Using Anatomy Visualization Tools To Focus Mindfulness During Postural Practice

Private lessons for 1 to 2 people by appointment.

The price of lessons is up to you after the lesson.

Lessons are given in my home or at other locations through negotiation.

The structure of my lessons is mostly a sequence of postures as with most yoga classes.  The “Side of Science” part is taking 5-10 minutes to use a model skeleton and an anatomy app to help visualize a particular part of the body. For example, the picture shown focuses on the shoulder and highlights the rotator cuffs.  Part of setting up an appointment includes a brief discussion of what part of the body you want to focus on, although I can always select one for the lesson.  With this image in mind, I discuss how that part of the body is aligned and how it moves.  As we progress through the postures I bring a mindful focus to how that part of the body contributes to and is affected by the postures.

I approach yoga as a secular practice and as a form of Modern Postural Yoga. I consider yoga a way to maintain and improve physical and psychological fitness.  My yoga education began with lessons from a variety of Iyengar instructors.  My experience has included a broad spectrum of styles as a consequence of traveling extensively and taking the opportunity to take classes from many instructors.  My certification is from Scott Anderson of Alignment Yoga.  I was drawn to Scott because of his focus on anatomy and it is his science based use of anatomy visualization tools that is the basis of my approach to yoga. The science of meditation and its benefits inform the mindfulness part of my instruction and practice.

It is important to understand that I provide education and aid awareness of the body.  I do not provide therapy or diagnosis of injuries.
